Our Roots

For over 40 years, Search has been transforming lives through the incredible power of face-to-face connections and meaningful conversations.

In 1977, Search Ministries was founded by a group of courageous young men deeply committed to sharing God's love with as many people as possible. Their mission was clear: to bring the best news in the world to their communities through honest conversations with spiritually curious adults.

In the 1970s and early 80s, Search Ministries established roots in ministry for the NFL and PGA and in the art of relationship-building through golf and ski trips. Between 1980 and 1990, Search Ministries published many valuable resources, including titles such as I'm Glad You Asked, The Search for Meaning, and Foundations: A Blueprint for Building a Relationship with God. Throughout the 2000s, Search has focused on staff expansion, retooling for future generations, and growing its library of resources to include new books, Bible studies, and podcasts.

For over 45 years, Search has held steadfast to its vision, aspiring for every adult in every city to be invited to know and share Jesus. Our unwavering mission is to encourage adults to take their next step toward God, meeting them wherever they are on their spiritual journey. Some are still in the exploratory phase, others are taking their first steps, and many are committed to helping their friends grasp the truth they have personally experienced.

Director of New Staff Training

Don Barkley has served as the area director for SEARCH in Orange County, California since 1985. Don has led hundreds of discussions in homes, businesses, country clubs and colleges, as well as on recreational retreats to ski mountains, tennis clubs and fishing expeditions. For several years Don served on the board of the Alliance for Spiritual Community, an inter-faith movement providing educational events, including the Religious Diversity Faire at San Juan Capistrano Catholic Mission, and at the University of California Irvine. He also has led weekly open forums at an Orange County treatment center for alcohol and chemical dependency. Don has taught courses as an adjunct instructor at Biola University and Talbot School of Theology. Before SEARCH and after college, he served on the pastoral staff of a church in his hometown of Laramie, Wyoming. He has degrees from Wheaton College and Dallas Theological Seminary. Don and his wife, Ann, live in Laguna Niguel and have four adult, married children and three grandsons.

Why did you choose to join Search? I believe that God really does love and cherish every individual and wants to have a relationship with him or her. If the great news in the Bible about Jesus is true, then there is no greater mission than to help people toward God. When I met the Search staff in 1984, I found people who were as excited about Jesus and about sharing this great news as I was.
